Beak Challenge

In Science, we studied birds and have learned all about the bird’s anatomy. The bird’s feet tell us where they live and the beaks tell us what they eat. First graders have learned about the different feathers of a bird, that they have two stomachs, good eyesight, and hollow bones. Students were challenged to only use the materials provided, they had to design and build a bird beak to pick up the most food in one try. (They were not to touch the food with their hands, only their beak). The materials they used to build their beak were plastic forks and spoons, toothpicks, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, rubber bands, unsharpened pencils, tape, and scissors. They designed their beaks differently based on what food they choose to pick up. The food was either dry beans or pasta. Once they tested the beaks they were able to go back and make changes and try again.
